In a heart-wrenching incident that has stirred a wave of indignation, a wolf pup was callously run over by a snowmobile and subjected to unimaginable suffering at the hands of Cody Roberts from Wyoming. The innocent creature, already gravely injured, was then subjected to further torment as Roberts callously wrapped its snout with tape before parading it around for entertainment at a local bar.
The distressing saga reached its tragic conclusion when Roberts, having had his fill of barbaric amusement, took the wounded pup behind the bar and ended its suffering with a gunshot. The incident, which occurred on February 29th, has not only exposed the dark underbelly of cruelty towards animals but has also raised serious questions about the adequacy of animal protection laws in Wyoming.
Wyoming, known for its expansive wilderness and wildlife, has become a battleground for advocates fighting against such wanton acts of cruelty. While the state permits hunting of wolves, it does not condone the needless infliction of suffering upon these majestic creatures.
Lori Wynn, CEO of Guardians of the Wolves, condemned the incident, stating, “Ethical hunters hunt to eat, not to make animals suffer. This is a grave case of animal cruelty that cannot be overlooked.” The organization, along with Saria Wolf, Board Director and Wildlife Conservation Student, is leading the charge for justice for the slain wolf pup.
The perpetrators of this heinous act must be held accountable under the law. However, the current legal framework falls short in delivering justice commensurate with the severity of the crime. Cody Roberts’ actions, while reprehensible, have only incurred a mere $250 citation for illegal possession of warm-blooded wildlife, highlighting a glaring gap in animal protection statutes.
According to Wyoming Law 6-3-1002, cruelty to animals is punishable, yet the penalties fail to reflect the gravity of such offenses. Moreover, Wyoming Game and Fish authorities do not extend animal cruelty statutes to predatory species, further complicating efforts to prosecute offenders.
In response to this travesty, Conserving the Wolves, is spearheading a campaign to demand stricter laws against animal cruelty in Wyoming. A petition has been launched, urging authorities to review existing legislation and implement measures to prevent future atrocities against wildlife.
