Can you tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from?

“I’m a California native, born and raised in the Bay Area. Although I started my journey there, I now find myself living and working in Southern California, where I serve as an Attending Anesthesiologist.”

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and why anesthesiology in particular?

“From a young age, I was fascinated by the human body and its complexities. The idea of using science to help people directly was incredibly appealing. I chose anesthesiology because it blends acute care, pharmacology, and physiology in a unique way. It provides an avenue where I can still work with my hands as well as my mind and, in real-time, curate the optimal choice of care for my patients. It’s a field that requires precision and calm under pressure, qualities I’ve always aspired to embody.”

Can you walk us through your educational journey? How did your studies prepare you for your current role?

“My academic path began at Oberlin College, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in 2002 in the Chemistry Department. I then returned home to the Bay Area to be closer to my family. During this time, I began working as an Emergency Medical Technician and volunteering in the Emergency Department at SF General Hospital. Following that, I attended Howard University College of Medicine and obtained my MD in 2010. After medical school, I completed an Internal Medicine Internship at Alameda County Medical Center through the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine in 2011. I then pursued an Anesthesiology Residency at the University of California Davis, which I completed in 2014. Each step of my education provided me with a robust foundation in medicine, specialized knowledge in anesthesiology, and the hands-on experience necessary to excel in my field.”

What challenges have you faced in your medical career, and how have you overcome them?

“One of the biggest challenges in medicine, and particularly in anesthesiology, is dealing with the unexpected. You have to make swift decisions that could significantly impact a patient’s outcome. I’ve learned to stay calm and focused, relying on my training and experience to guide me through these moments. Continual learning and staying updated with the latest medical research and technology have also been crucial in overcoming these challenges.”

What advice would you give to medical students or residents interested in pursuing anesthesiology?

“Anesthesiology is a challenging but incredibly rewarding field. My advice would be to embrace every learning opportunity, whether it’s in the classroom or in the clinics. Develop a strong foundation in physiology and pharmacology, as these are essential in anesthesiology. Additionally, work on your communication skills, as teamwork and patient interaction are key components of our daily duties. Most importantly, you should always remember the impact you have on patients’ lives and the trust they place in you.”

Finally, how do you see the field of anesthesiology evolving in the next few years?

“The field of anesthesiology is at the forefront of adopting new technologies and techniques to improve patient care. I believe we’ll see more advancements in non-opioid anesthetics, precision medicine tailored to individual patients’ genetic makeup, and enhanced recovery protocols that will minimize hospital stays and improve outcomes. It’s an exciting time to be in the field, and I look forward to contributing to these advancements.”
