Akkodis’ Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) initiative, “OneVoice,” is revolutionizing the way aircraft are designed and built. It fosters collaboration and efficiency across disciplines, exemplifying the company’s innovative spirit, according to Mike Small, President of Akkodis North America.

The Power of MBSE

Established in 2020, Akkodis’ MBSE department plays a crucial role. MBSE isn’t a new concept – it’s been used in aerospace and automotive for over a decade. But Akkodis takes a pragmatic approach, focusing on real-world solutions. Patrice Antoinette, the company’s MBSE Product Owner, explains how they cater to different systems: “A distributed system functions differently than an autonomous one. Electrical or landing gear systems require distinct processes compared to IT systems like flight controls.”

This expertise allows Akkodis to develop customized systems engineering methods for clients. They leverage NASA’s definition of conceptual modeling: “a means of collecting, synchronizing, and refining a common architecture based on the collective knowledge of practitioners.”

Bridging the Gap Between Conceptual and Executable Models

Traditionally, aircraft manufacturers relied on simulation models for real-world behavior, while conceptual models remained paper-based, containing requirements, equations, plans, and graphics. With digitalization, simulation models took priority. MBSE allows Akkodis to bridge this gap by digitizing conceptual models as well.

This is particularly important when dealing with legacy aircraft. Updating 40-year-old conceptual models manually to reflect changes in simulation models would be a nightmare. Akkodis’ MBSE Continuity provides an automated solution, ensuring smooth and cost-effective aircraft evolution.

OneVoice: A Shared Language for Collaboration

“OneVoice” signifies a unified approach – everyone speaks the same language. The MBSE team has created a standardized language with its own grammar and ontology called “MBSE Standard.” Based on SysML and adapted for aeronautical design, this common language fosters collaboration and ensures all departments work in harmony to develop coherent aircraft concepts.

This approach benefited one of Akkodis’ clients who wanted to improve their Service Bulletin (SB) process for managing aircraft modifications. Akkodis helped them identify bottlenecks and optimize turnaround times by modeling the SB process and providing calculation tools.

Breaking Down Silos with a Multidisciplinary Approach

OneVoice aligns perfectly with Akkodis’ Smart Industry vision, which dismantles barriers between disciplines and skillsets. “Engineering is moving towards a multidisciplinary approach, and so is Akkodis,” says Patrice. “This project exemplifies the benefits of breaking down silos, and it’s a journey the company is committed to.”
