Darrell Daniels, born on December 17, 1967, in New London, Connecticut, has a lifelong commitment to education and community service. As a student at New London High School, he excelled academically and athletically, serving as valedictorian and a scholar-athlete while playing varsity football. His early dedication to research was evident through his apprenticeship at the Naval Underwater Systems Center from ninth grade until graduation.

Darrell pursued higher education at Stanford University, earning a BA in Political Science in 1989 and an MA in Education in 1990, supported by the Irvine Foundation Fellowship. He continued his academic journey at Harvard University, receiving a Master of Public Policy in 1996. Darrell has held several leadership positions in education, including roles as a principal and assistant principal within the San Francisco Unified School District. Since August 2023, he has been the Principal at MLK Middle School in the Hayward Unified School District. Outside of his professional life, Darrell enjoys reading, politics, travel, comedy, basketball, theater, R&B, and jazz.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education and eventually become a principal?

My journey into education was driven by a deep-rooted passion for learning and a desire to make a positive impact on young minds. Growing up in New London, Connecticut, I was fortunate to have teachers and mentors who recognized my potential and encouraged me to strive for excellence. My experiences as a student shaped my understanding of the transformative power of education. These experiences, combined with my apprenticeship at the Naval Underwater Systems Center, fueled my passion for guiding and mentoring the next generation. Becoming a principal allowed me to extend my impact beyond the classroom, shaping the educational environment and fostering a culture of growth and excellence.

How do you define success for your students and your school?

Success for me is multi-faceted. For our students, success means more than just academic achievement; it encompasses their overall well-being, character development, and readiness for the future. I want our students to leave MLK Middle School not only with strong academic foundations but also with the skills to navigate life’s challenges, the confidence to pursue their passions, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

For our school, success is reflected in a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. It’s about continuous improvement, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, and building strong partnerships with families and the community. Ultimately, success is creating a place where students love to learn and teachers love to teach.

Can you share your vision for integrating technology in education at MLK Middle School?

Technology integration is a key component of my vision for MLK Middle School. I believe that technology, when used effectively, can enhance the learning experience, personalize education, and prepare our students for a tech-driven world. My approach involves ensuring that our school has the necessary infrastructure, providing professional development for teachers, and integrating technology into the curriculum in meaningful ways.

This means using adaptive learning platforms to tailor instruction to individual student needs, incorporating interactive tools to make lessons more engaging, and teaching digital literacy and citizenship. By embedding technology into our everyday practices, we can create a dynamic and innovative learning environment that meets the diverse needs of our students and equips them with essential 21st-century skills.

How do you approach the challenge of addressing learning gaps, especially in a post-pandemic context?

Addressing learning gaps, particularly those exacerbated by the pandemic, requires a comprehensive and personalized approach. At MLK Middle School, we focus on personalized learning plans that assess each student’s unique needs and provide targeted interventions. This involves regular assessments to identify gaps, differentiated instruction to address diverse learning styles, and additional support such as tutoring and small group instruction.

We also leverage technology to offer personalized learning experiences and track progress. Moreover, professional development for teachers is crucial to equip them with the skills to implement these strategies effectively. At MLK Middle School, we take a comprehensive approach to physical wellness, which includes a robust physical education program, integrating physical activity throughout the school day, and supporting mental and emotional health.

Our PE program offers diverse activities to engage all students, from traditional sports to yoga and dance. We incorporate active breaks and outdoor play to keep students moving, and we integrate wellness education into the curriculum to teach healthy habits. Additionally, we provide counseling and support services to address mental health needs and create a positive school climate that fosters well-being.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is central to my leadership style. It involves self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills. By understanding and managing my own emotions and being attuned to the emotions of others, I can create a more supportive and effective school environment.

I cultivate EI among our staff through professional development that focuses on self-reflection, stress management, and empathy. For our students, we integrate social-emotional learning into the curriculum, providing opportunities for them to develop these skills through classroom activities, counseling, and peer interactions. By fostering EI, we build a school culture where everyone feels understood, respected, and empowered.

How do you ensure that the curriculum at MLK Middle School is inclusive and culturally responsive?

This involves incorporating diverse perspectives and materials that reflect the experiences and contributions of different cultures. One of the rewarding aspects of being a principal is seeing the growth and success of our students. Watching them develop academically, socially, and emotionally, and knowing that our efforts are making a positive impact on their lives, is incredibly fulfilling. I also find great satisfaction in supporting and empowering our teachers, helping them to grow professionally and create meaningful learning experiences for our students.

Additionally, building a positive school culture and fostering a sense of community among students, staff, and families is immensely rewarding. Seeing the collective efforts of our school community come together to create a supportive and enriching environment makes all the challenges worthwhile.

What advice would you give to aspiring school leaders?

To aspiring school leaders, I would say that leadership is about serving others and making a positive impact. It’s important to lead with empathy, integrity, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Build strong relationships with your students, staff, and community, and always prioritize their well-being and growth.

Stay adaptable and open to new ideas, and don’t be afraid to take risks and innovate. Lastly, remember that leadership is a journey. There will be challenges along the way, but stay focused on your mission and values, and you will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those you lead.

How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal interests and well-being?

Balancing professional responsibilities with personal interests and well-being is essential for sustained success and fulfillment. I make it a priority to set aside time for activities that I enjoy, such as reading, traveling, playing basketball, and enjoying music and theater. These activities help me recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

I also practice self-care through regular exercise, mindfulness, and spending quality time with family and friends. By taking care of my well-being, I can stay energized and focused, which allows me to be more effective in my role as a principal and a leader.
