Carson, you’ve had quite a journey from being a record-breaking receiver for the Cedar Park Timberwolves to now pursuing an MSC in Finance at SMU. How has your background in sports influenced your career in finance?

Carson Neel: “Playing sports, especially football, taught me about discipline, teamwork, and resilience. In finance, you need discipline to stay focused on long-term goals, teamwork to collaborate effectively with colleagues, and resilience to navigate the ups and downs of the market. My time on the field was more than just about athletics; it was a foundation for life skills.”

You were also very active academically and even elected as President of the Young Men’s Service League Cedar Park chapter. How did these experiences shape your leadership style?

Carson Neel: “Being involved academically and in leadership roles early on taught me the importance of service and community. As President of the Young Men’s Service League, I learned how to lead with empathy and inclusivity. These are traits I carry into my professional life, striving to create environments where everyone’s voice is heard and valued.”

Transitioning from TCU’s Neeley School of Business to SMU for your master’s, what are your main academic and professional goals right now?

Carson Neel: “At TCU, I gained a solid foundation in business principles, and now at SMU, I’m looking to deepen my knowledge in finance. My goal is to blend my analytical skills with the latest financial theories to make informed decisions in the dynamic world of finance. Professionally, I aim to work in a role where I can apply these skills, perhaps in investment banking or corporate finance.”

Your involvement with the Kappa Sig fraternity at TCU must have been an enriching experience. Can you share how this influenced your career path?

Carson Neel: “Absolutely. Being a part of Kappa Sig was about brotherhood and personal growth. It helped me develop my networking skills and taught me the value of building strong, supportive relationships. These experiences have been invaluable in my career, especially in finance where networking and relationships are key.”

With your background in sports, academics, and leadership, what advice do you have for students who are looking to follow a similar path?

Carson Neel: “I would say, embrace every opportunity and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Balance is key; excel in your academics, but also make time for extracurriculars that develop other skills.”
