Music has long been a powerful medium for social change, giving voice to movements and uniting people across barriers. Women musicians, in particular, have played pivotal roles in inspiring political change and highlighting issues that matter. From Joan Baez’s activism in the 1960s to Patti Spadaro’s latest single, “Glass Shatters,” inspired by Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic swearing-in, women in music continue to shape the political landscape.

Patti Spadaro, a dynamic guitarist, singer, and songwriter, has made waves with her latest single “Glass Shatters,” released last month. The song is a tribute to the strength and resilience of women, inspired by the historic moment when Kamala Harris became the first female Vice President of the United States.

“Glass Shatters” began taking shape during the winter of 2020-2021, as Spadaro was moved by the significant moment. “I remember sitting by the TV and watching the swearing-in of our first female Vice President,” Spadaro recalls. “I was so excited to finally be represented in the second highest seat of our government. I wanted to celebrate this historic moment together. This was a true moment of progress.”

Described as a “rallying cry,” the song aims to unite women from all walks of life and celebrate their progress. The track features five women’s voices harmonizing and weaving together—Spadaro on guitar, Anne Celedonia on keys, and background vocalists Cherylann Hawk, Jill Simmons, and Alison McTavish. Drummer and recording engineer Eric Kurtzrock and bassist Ryan Black also bring their unique talents to the mix.

Recorded at Blue Door Recorders in Pittsburgh, “Glass Shatters” showcases the local talent and collaborative spirit that defines the Patti Spadaro Band. Spadaro’s heartfelt songwriting and creative lead guitar work continue to inspire and uplift, standing as a testament to the transformative power of music.

In addition to Ms. Spadaro, Taylor Swift is another influential woman in music who has used her platform to impact politics. Known for her musical evolution and powerful lyrics, Swift has also become an outspoken advocate for various social and political causes.

In recent years, she has used her immense following to encourage voter registration, endorse candidates, and speak out on issues like LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality. During the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, Swift endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, urging her fans to participate in the democratic process. Her documentary “Miss Americana” also sheds light on her political awakening and the importance of using her voice for change.

Additionally, Madonna, often dubbed the “Queen of Pop,” has never shied away from using her music and public persona to challenge societal norms and address political issues. Throughout her career, she has pushed boundaries on topics like sexuality, gender, and religion.

In addition to her provocative stage performances and music videos, Madonna has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. She has spoken out against political leaders, supported women’s rights, and participated in campaigns for AIDS research. Her boldness in the face of controversy has inspired countless women to use their voices and talents to advocate for change.

Going back to the 20th century, Joan Baez is a folk music legend whose influence on politics is profound. Known for her distinctive voice and guitar work, Baez’s music became the soundtrack for the civil rights movement and anti-war protests of the 1960s.

Baez’s commitment to social justice is reflected in her extensive catalog of protest songs and her participation in marches and demonstrations. She performed at the March on Washington in 1963 and has been a vocal advocate for human rights throughout her career. Her music continues to inspire activists and musicians alike, reminding us of the power of art in the fight for justice.

Finally, Lady Gaga, a pop icon and powerhouse performer, has also left an indelible mark on politics through her advocacy and activism. Known for her boundary-pushing performances and fashion, Gaga has used her platform to address issues like mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and sexual assault.

Her Born This Way Foundation empowers youth and promotes mental health awareness. Gaga’s bold statements and philanthropic efforts have earned her a significant place in the world of social activism, demonstrating how celebrities can leverage their influence for the greater good.

From Joan Baez’s protest anthems to Patti Spadaro’s “Glass Shatters,” women musicians have continually used their art to influence politics and inspire change. These artists remind us that music is not just entertainment; it’s a powerful tool for advocacy and empowerment. As we celebrate the progress made by women in music and politics, we also look forward to a future where their voices continue to lead us toward a more just and equitable world.
