When you think about your career, are you happy and satisfied? Between the salary, title, and work environment, is it everything you hoped for? If you said “no,” that’s okay because you are not alone in the struggle. Sometimes, having a bad job is not worth the salary and benefits. No matter how long you have been in your career or how high you have climbed the corporate ladder, you don’t have to stay in a job that makes you miserable. The fear of starting fresh is all too real, but something else is out there; you just have to believe in yourself. Your years of experience and skills will help lead you into a new role. You don’t have to sacrifice your well-being for a paycheck anymore.

Studies show that people across the United States are up and leaving their jobs. 46% of professionals say they are considering quitting their current job for a new one sometime in the next year or so. This number is 6% higher than during the great resignation that happened in 2022. These numbers show that so many people are in the same boat and that it’s okay to navigate a new career.

There are so many different reasons people are unsatisfied with their roles, and many times, it can be something other than salary. A lot of times, it has to do with a toxic workplace that does not necessarily prioritize growth and employee well-being. A job is so much more than a paycheck, and if you are dreading going to work every day, that is a sign that something is wrong. But don’t let this knock you down. You can be proactive about your career because it’s never too late for a change.

“I know what it’s like to feel stuck, to feel that you’re not in the right place in your career, company, or life. I’ve dreaded the alarm clock ringing in the morning, the people I didn’t want to talk to, and the meetings I didn’t want to take. I have 100% been there and done that. Those experiences led me through different careers and positions that all came together to teach me valuable things,” says A.J. Mizes, CEO & Founder of The Human Reach.

There are so many resources out there to help you take those first steps towards your next goal. Whether that’s using your network connections as a means to land a job or getting help from professional coaches who have seen the ins and outs of the job market, there are ways to get started. It’s also important to trust in yourself as an employee. Think about all the things you have accomplished and how your skills and experience can be an asset to a new team.

Just because you are starting fresh does not mean you have to build yourself from the ground up. Think about who you want to be as an employee and trust in your guts that you can achieve your goals. No matter how good your paycheck is, if you are not happy, it might not be worth it.

“I’ve interviewed thousands of people, understood what makes employers tick, and coached executives on how to sell themselves and talk about their experience. I’ve worked with individuals who needed to take a few stepping stones before landing their dream job and guided them on how to do it. Watching and helping them get paid more, get promoted, and crush it was incredible,” Mizes says.

There are so many people out there just stuck in boring, toxic jobs, but you don’t have to have a good salary or a healthy work environment. There are jobs out there that offer both; you don’t have to choose. Decide what you value in a career and make a leap into something that you know will satisfy your desires.

Starting a new job is scary, but it doesn’t have to be because you can rely on yourself as an experienced employee. Your career path does not have to be linear because you can chart your own course.
