An interview with Peter G. Ruppert, Founder, and CEO of Fusion Education Group

Tell us your name and a little about yourself.

My name is Peter Ruppert. I founded what is today known as the Fusion Education Group in Grand Rapids, MI in 2007. Today, I remain the CEO of the business. I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, and started my career with Procter and Gamble. Later, I received my MBA, joined a consulting firm, and eventually became an entrepreneur in the consulting industry before moving into K-12 education almost 25 years ago.

Recently, I published my first book, Limitless: Nine Steps to Launch Your One Extraordinary Life. It’s targeted towards people who don’t want to “settle” or accept things as “good enough” and have dreams they want to chase, not give up on. It’s short: 150 pages filled with stories, additional resources to dig deeper, and a workbook-like format at the end of each chapter to help the reader design their limitless future.

What exactly does your company do?

Today, we own and operate 78 accredited private schools around the country under the Fusion Academy, Futures Academy, and Barnstable Academy brands. Our schools are unique, personalized private schools that provide one-to-one (one teacher, one student in each class) education for students in grades 6 through 12. Due to our small school populations, our teachers can get to know every child and provide mentoring as well as individualized instruction. Because of this personalized approach for each student, we are often able to provide life-changing results for our students.

Recently, we launched our first virtual school, Fusion Global Academy. With its on-line program, we can provide the same high-touch, highly personalized one-to-one educational program to anyone in the United States or even internationally.

What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?

I was always driven to be an entrepreneur and I started a few businesses early in my career that didn’t work out. Realizing that something you worked really hard on wasn’t succeeding and trying to recover from that was a huge challenge. Fortunately, I learned from others that failures can actually be good things and what’s most important is how we respond to them. I made the decision to not let such events define my future. I was fortunate to have some great mentors who helped me get through some of these tough times.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?

I wish I had learned earlier about the power of vision-setting and writing things down. It wasn’t until I was in my 30’s that I learned to write out a detailed, descriptive vision for my future and to set and write down specific goals on an annual and quarterly basis. That alone changed the trajectory of my life. In retrospect, the vision I cast and almost all the goals I wrote down have come true for me. Once we write things down in specifics, our mind seemingly attaches to these, and subconsciously works to move us towards these goals.

Also, I wish I had realized that even the most successful people in the world deal with self-doubt at times and often endure very challenging journeys on their way to “success.” I always thought successful people just had it all together and that I was the only one who had periodic struggles with self-doubt. Now, of course, I realize that all of us battle negative thoughts at times and it’s completely normal. Both of these concepts are covered in detail in my book. In fact, the first chapter is “Win the Battle in Your Head,” and focuses on the importance of building a positive mindset.

Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?

I’ve always loved learning about some of the great entrepreneurs and innovators. People like Howard Schulz at Starbucks, Steve Jobs at Apple, Walt Disney, etc. I’ve also admired many of the iconic sports coaches, like John Wooden at UCLA and Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?

Mark Twain once said, “Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that. But, the really great make you believe that you, too, can become great.” I love that quote because it shows what the power of great mentors and influencers can be.

Certainly, my parents were a huge influence on me in different but equally important ways. My Dad fueled my interest in entrepreneurship by loaning me the money to start my first two businesses in high school and college: a lawn mowing business and a blacktop sealing business.

Also, I did a semester-long internship for a gentleman named David Morehead when I was in college. He was a successful entrepreneur and provided great opportunities for me to learn about leading a business, but he also encouraged me to think bigger about my future. In one of our conversations, he encouraged me to try to get into Harvard Business School. At the time, I wasn’t even considering business school and never even dreamed of getting into a school of that caliber. But, that one conversation changed my perspective, helped me create new goals, and made me shoot higher. And, sure enough, four years later, I applied and was admitted. Certainly, that conversation changed my future dramatically.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

I’m proudest that I’ve been able to be successful in more than just my career. I have a great family. My wife, Jess, and I have been happily married for over 30 years. We have four kids, Jack, Grace, Pierce, and Ben, who are each pursuing their own dreams.  I’m a firm believer that success in only one area of life doesn’t mean much if other areas are unhealthy.

I’m also proud of the number of people who I’ve mentored or led over the years and the amazing successes many of them have become.

Coach Mike Souza: A Love Affair With Basketball

Coach Michael “Mike” Souza, born in Staten Island, New York, is currently living in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he has created a career in basketball training. Working with ESPN Top 100 players, Collegiate, and NBA Pro players, he has made a significant stamp on the basketball market.

Coach Mike has always had a strong affinity and patience for helping people figure out and work through their problems. He also has what he has termed “an everlasting love” for basketball; for him, the courts were a home away from home and a place to escape. It would become a defining moment for him when he realized that these two things he was so passionate about could be combined into a career.

Coach Mike has worked with basketball players of all ages and levels. From John Collins of the Atlanta Hawks to Ersan Ilyasova of the Milwaukee Bucks, Scottie Barnes – who is a projected lottery pick of Florida State University – to Jahcobi Neath of Wake Forest University. He has also worked with Alonzo Gee, a longtime NBA player, and Nicky Jam, an icon in the reggaeton industry and a Puerto Rican musician.

With a wealth of experience from being a former High school Coach and a Player Development Coach at the college level – Mike knows what it takes to play at the next level. A significant part of his success is his proven ability to make players’ workouts translate directly into the game. He is known for his ability to study each player and accommodate their needs while building impactful relationships that last beyond the basketball court.

“Seeing players get results after working with me just gave me confidence and fuelled my drive to get better at my craft as a player development coach,” Coach Mike says.

Like most people, Mike felt the impact of the COVID19 pandemic as things slowed down and gyms were forced to close. Basketball is a physical sport, and practically, there is only so much that can be achieved virtually. Nevertheless, he continued giving value whenever possible – on virtual and social media platforms, he regularly shared his knowledge and love for the game, inspiring fans and players alike. By July, he finally returned to the court with his players to resume their training and careers.

Coach Mike is a dedicated trainer with a formidable skill set and extensive study of basketball. He considers it his mission to help others achieve their dreams, conquering what they set out to do—encouraging the development of a strong moral character and the commitment level necessary for his athletes to make it to a championship level of success. Mike understands each athlete’s needs and helps guide them along the path of success. Despite what he has achieved, he does not plan on quitting anytime soon. He sees himself working with players at the highest level during the offseason for years to come – helping anyone dedicated to honing their craft to perfection.

“Although playing professionally was not in the cards for me, my love for the sport has never died. I am beyond confident this is the career I was meant to pursue,” he shares.

He remains a highly sought out Skills Coach in the U.S and a private Player Development Coach for multiple NBA and International Pro players.

K. Maldonado Shows Freedom Induces Courage in Hitting Goals

“It’s easy to fear failure, but much harder to keep faith that everything will fall through how it should. To me, fear is a choice. You always have two options: faith or fear. I choose faith because knowing that my life has so much purpose means I can never go wrong, and allows me to face my fears head on.” These wise words are from Kareesha Carter Maldonado, also known as K. Maldonado, a multi-faceted wife, mother, and girl boss taking multiple industries by the storm.

They say that courage is not the absence of fear but acknowledging fear and still doing it anyway. K. Maldonado’s experiences can be compared to how diamonds are made, with extreme pressure. Growing up, she witnessed her mom being sent to jail at a young age, which led her to live a life raised by her grandmother. A few years later, she decided to move out and get that freedom she longed for. So, at the age of 17, she started to make a living for herself.

With her well being and freedom as significant drivers for her to be the best in her work, K. Maldonado explored multiple industries and held on to her dream of becoming a lady boss. With her wit, perseverance, and positive mindset, she established her own business in the beauty industry, specifically in hair products.

Aside from managing her own company, she knew that everyone needs to see the reality of starting a business: it is not as easy as it seems. With all these articles and posts on social media about getting rich fast schemes and other people promising instant success within an unrealistic time frame, people need to know the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of being an entrepreneur.

  1. Maldonado harnesses her experiences and struggles before she was able to make $100,000 monthly despite this pandemic in her speeches, coaching sessions, and hosting a podcast. Lady Boss is the podcast wherein she imparts nuggets of wisdom on how one can be successful in any field of choice.

One of the main points she puts in the spotlight is starting, taking the first step forward. According to K. Maldonado, it is the most challenging move to make as it needs a healthy mindset. However, the journey doesn’t stop there. One must keep nourishing that mindset, learning and growing, with every experience and lessons packed in it, to get to a particular goal.

By applying the lessons, she teaches and shares, K. Maldonado is one of the people who turned this pandemic into a profit. As a living testament to all her teachings, she continues to bloom like a magnolia in may and expands her reach like grassroots.

Indeed, this lady boss is not stopping from making her dreams into a reality and helping others simultaneously. Making others feel good about themselves motivates K. Maldonado to be her better self each day. Hence, she continuously works on new products and projects. Next year, she plans to release an eBook to widen her audience to help more.

Crystal Varellas Takes on Promoting Physical Fitness and Transforming Bodies

Being fit can be challenging in a world filled with a plethora of reasons for gluttony and a sedentary lifestyle. For some individuals, it can be unnecessary. However, Crystal Varellas chooses to disagree on that part. She wants to change how people and society view fitness. Physical fitness is not a word related to individuals obsessed with how they look and other signs of vanity. Instead, fitness is a state of health and well-being.

Crystal Varellas has been in the fitness industry for 13 years. When she was 23 years old, she took the chance to open up her fitness facility, but unfortunate circumstances made her decide to close it at age 26. Owning over 30 different licenses and certificates, Crystal Varellas’ take on physical fitness is indeed a serious matter. Most of these certificates include experiences in food and nutrition too. Physical fitness is a combination of what people eat, how much people exercise, and what people feed to their inner aspects.

When Crystal was in her early 20s, she traveled to different parts of the East Coast, as a Bokwa Education Specialist. She did all these travels to train and certify Bokwa instructors. Crystal has also trained clients of all ages and worked in different fitness facilities to improve her experience and share her expertise.

Currently, Crystal Varellas leaped faith and found the reason to go through every setback that might be thrown at her. She now owns and operates an online coaching business. She transforms her clients’ lives and molds them to reach their fitness goals with additional learnings about proper nutrition, mental coaching, and empowerment tips.

All her experiences, good and bad, led her to pursue taking control of her dreams, and that is to become an excellent example for many fitness enthusiasts out there. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer, she took it as the motivation and an opportunity to empower the individuals who need a constant reminder to love their bodies and practice a healthy lifestyle.

Crystal has started with coaching programs that promote a total transformation. She calls this program “totALL Transform.” It focuses on physical fitness, wholesome nutritional wellness, and mental wellness. These three factors are prerequisites to achieving a total transformation for any individual. What makes her program exemplary is the fact that it does not focus on only one goal. Instead, it aims to achieve the optimal functioning that any individual deserves in their lifetime.

The amount of drive, accountability, and education Crystal is providing for her participants is unmatched. She pours every second of her experience throughout those years and all her sweat and hard work so she can be remembered as someone who made a significant impact on those she chose to help. She wants to tell the world nothing feels better than waking up in the morning and doing the right things to benefit every aspect of your body.

Physical fitness might be mostly overlooked and undermined, but Crystal’s goal of being the change that needs to be acted upon is slowly changing how society views fitness and nutrition. She does not want people to be determined by their weight. She wants to tell them that there will always be ways to act on it if they do not like something. Crystal also wants people to love their bodies and accept them while taking care of them. Growing up overweight, she was filled with all the negative things she could think about herself. She does not want anybody to experience what she has gone through, which motivated her to start this coaching program.
