MOVERS and SHAKERS Interview with Dawn Cutillo
Tell us your name and a little about yourself.
My name is Dawn Cutillo; I am the founder of BeBalanced Hormone Weight Loss Centers. I have been in a field I absolutely love for 32 years. I’m thankful that I wake up every day excited to learn but also to help others along their path to mental, emotional, and physical health.
I believe you should do something fun for yourself every day even if you can’t do it for a living. I love writing, dance, massage, yoga and spiritual practice. I enjoy a mix of being out with friends at parties balanced with times of being in solitude. Oftentimes these moments bring me epiphanies that help me and my business succeed.
What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge I faced was starting a business which seemed to not exist: natural hormone balancing. Because it falls under the category of holistic health, there are some people not willing to consider the power of natural remedies. I’ve always been careful to base what we do on science and studies, but there will always be people who have doubts and I have learned to accept that and be confident in our practices.
What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?
I would have liked to be assured that if you are passionate about what you do and become the best in a certain area, the money will follow. All I wanted to do was carve out a niche market working with women in health and nutrition full-time, and I wasn’t sure if that would be possible. There weren’t many career options in alternative medicine when I first started, but then I realized I could create a business from the ground up and build my own path.
Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?
The people inspire me the most are those who get up and keep trying after failing multiple times. This shows an inner drive and is usually the foundational story of any entrepreneur. Our clients at BeBalanced also inspire me because they have oftentimes taken many routes to weight loss, emotional balance, or other health goals without success. Despite their struggles and vulnerability, they were willing to take one more chance and trust us to help them reach their wellness goals.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?
My spiritual guide and counsellor always taught me to look inside myself for answers because they are always there. She is now 88 and one of my closest friends. I’m very grateful for her and her wisdom; esteeming the elderly for their years of experience is something I hope becomes more a part of our culture.
What do you see as your greatest success in life?
I have some big plans for the future, but my greatest success in life so far was creating my own reality using focused energy, thought and passion. I wanted to create a beautiful environment in the community where women can get their health questions answered, be validated in their concerns and become hopeful again. BeBalanced has become that place for many women, where they feel empowered as they walk out the door. It’s also become a place for entrepreneurs who believe in the same philosophy to join me on my journey, and we have established a great team of go-getters who are working to expand our work nationally. I am proud and thankful for that.
